The gut-skin axis: Why beautiful skin starts in the gut

Acne, redness, premature ageing of the skin – the condition of your skin is often determined by your gut. How the gut-skin axis works, the three ways in which the gut influences the skin, and what really helps.

The gut-skin axis: Why beautiful skin starts in the gut

We usually treat the skin from the outside: cleansing, serum, cream. Yet a growing body of research shows that the condition of the skin is determined to an astonishing degree elsewhere – in the gut. The technical term for this is Gut-skin axis.

It describes a constant interaction between the gut, the immune system and the skin. If the balance in the gut is disrupted, this often has visible consequences further up the body.

What the gut-skin axis is

Trillions of microorganisms live in the gut – the microbiome. Not only do they aid digestion, they also interact closely with the immune system and produce signalling molecules that reach the whole body via the bloodstream. Studies have repeatedly linked an imbalance in this bacterial community (dysbiosis) to skin problems such as acne, rosacea and eczema, as well as to accelerated skin ageing.

Three ways in which the gut affects the skin

1. About inflammation

If the intestinal barrier is weakened (often referred to as „leaky gut“), substances that do not belong there enter the bloodstream. The immune system responds with a silent, low-grade, persistent inflammation – and it is precisely this chronic inflammation („inflammaging“) that drives skin ageing and inflammatory skin conditions.

2. On nutrient absorption

The skin is only as well nourished as the gut is able to absorb nutrients. Amino acids, vitamin C, zinc and silicon – the building blocks for collagen and a healthy skin barrier – all pass through the gut. Even with a good diet, a gut that is not functioning properly may not allow enough of these nutrients to pass through. Ultimately, this is a question of Bioavailability.

3. About the microbiome itself

Beneficial gut bacteria convert dietary fibre into short-chain fatty acids – substances that reduce inflammation and support the barrier function of the gut and skin. A diverse microbiome plays a role here in supporting the skin.

What helps the gut – and therefore the skin –

  • Fibre and plant diversity. They are food for the beneficial bacteria. Rule of thumb: include as many different plants as possible each week.
  • Fermented. Yoghurt, kefir and sauerkraut provide live cultures. To be honest: the effects are real, but usually moderate and strain-specific – they’re no miracle cure.
  • Omega-3 instead of sugar. Omega-3 has anti-inflammatory properties, whilst a lot of Sugar and highly processed foods promote the wrong bacterial environment.
  • Fewer unnecessary antibiotics and less stress. Both cause a measurable imbalance in the microbiome.

Important to bear in mind: A single „probiotic tablet“ is rarely the solution. What matters is your dietary pattern over a period of weeks – variety is better than a single supplement.

What this means for nutricosmetics

The gut-skin axis is, ultimately, the biological basis for the principle Beauty from within: Everything we consume only takes effect once it has passed through the gut. Hydrolysed collagen peptides, for example, are absorbed in the gut – a healthy gut is essential for them to be effective. The Liquid collagen from Bettervita provides the building blocks in a form that is already easily absorbed; a gut-friendly daily routine ensures that they are actually utilised.

Beautiful skin doesn’t start in a jar, but in the gut. What ends up there determines what becomes visible on the surface.
