Marine or bovine collagen: which is best suited to which goal?

Marine collagen from fish or bovine collagen? An objective comparison of types, bioavailability, sustainability and allergies – and why, ultimately, form and co-factors are more important than the source.

Marine or bovine collagen: which is best suited to which goal?

Anyone looking to take collagen supplements is soon faced with a fundamental question: marine collagen from fish or bovine collagen? In marketing, one or the other is sometimes touted as the „better“ option. The honest answer is: it depends on your goal – and on the form.

Where the collagen comes from

Bovine collagen is derived from the skin and connective tissue of cattle and is primarily used to provide Type I and Type III. Marine collagen is derived from fish skin and consists mainly of Type I. Both are hydrolysed for use as food supplements – that is, broken down enzymatically into short peptides.

The characters – and why they matter

Not all collagen is the same. Type I accounts for around 90 % of the body’s collagen and is found in the skin, bones and tendons – the „beauty and structural type“. Type III accompanies Type I in the skin and blood vessels. Type II, on the other hand, is found in cartilage and is usually derived from chicken collagen – particularly relevant when it comes to Joints.

  • Skin, anti-ageing: Type I (and III) – both marine and bovine collagen are used here.
  • Bones: Type I – the organic bone matrix consists predominantly of this.
  • Cartilage/joints: Type II is the more specialised topic here.

Bioavailability and amino acid profile

Marine collagen is often considered to be particularly well absorbed because its peptides tend to be slightly smaller. In practice, however, both sources hydrolysed to over 90 % absorbable – the difference is smaller than the advert suggests. What matters more than the source is whether the collagen is hydrolysed in the first place. Read more about this in the article Bioavailability explained simply.

Sustainability, allergies, diet

Marine collagen is often produced from by-products of fish processing; bovine collagen from those of cattle farming. Neither is vegan. A practical point to note: Anyone who Fish allergy If you prefer beef, go for that; if you don’t want beef for other reasons, opt for marine collagen.

What really matters

Ultimately, it is not so much the source that matters as the sum of Form, dose and cofactor: hydrolysed peptides, available immediately in liquid form, combined with vitamin C. The Bettervita Pro Active Advanced Liquid Collagen contains Type I and III bovine peptides (Fortigel®) combined with vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, zinc and silicon – for the skin, hair and connective tissue. The following shows how the same active ingredient works over the years: Collagen from the age of 30.

It is not a question of „fish or beef“, but of type, form and co-factor. The best source is the one that the body actually absorbs.
