Cellulite: What really works – and what’s just a waste of money
80–90 % of women have cellulite – whether they’re slim or not. What’s really behind it, what creams, massages and the like can actually do, and what the research on collagen peptides really shows.

First of all, in the interests of honesty: according to estimates, 80 to 90 % for women Cellulite – whether you’re slim or not. It’s not a flaw or a sign of neglect, but largely a question of body structure and hormones. Nevertheless, it is possible to improve the appearance of the skin. The only question is: what really works – and what doesn’t.
What cellulite actually is
Beneath the skin, strands of connective tissue (septa) anchor the skin to deeper layers, whilst fat compartments lie in between. In women, these septa run vertical – pushes the fat upwards, creating the typical dimpled pattern. In men, the pattern is net-like, which is why cellulite is rarely visible there. Oestrogen, genetics, the quality of connective tissue, skin thickness and blood circulation all play a part.
Why it isn’t just a problem of fat
Even very slim women have cellulite. Losing weight can slightly improve the appearance, but it does not eliminate it – because the cause lies in the structure of the connective tissue and the skin, not solely in the amount of fat. With the A drop in oestrogen levels during the menopause and as the skin becomes thinner, cellulite can actually become more pronounced.
What helps – and what just costs money
- Creams (caffeine, retinol): At best, a short-term, superficial effect – no structural change.
- Massage, foam rolling, lymphatic drainage: improve blood circulation and reduce swelling temporarily, not permanently.
- Strength training: Builds muscle, tones the body and genuinely improves the appearance of the skin – the underrated solution.
- Medical procedures (shockwave therapy, subcision, laser): there is some evidence to support these, but they are expensive and produce variable results.
What research into collagen shows
One approach focuses not on fat, but on the Connective tissue . In a randomised controlled trial conducted by Schunck et al. (2015) Over a six-month period, specific bioactive collagen peptides improved the appearance of the skin and reduced the severity of cellulite – in both normal-weight and overweight women – by strengthening the dermis and connective tissue. To be honest: a tangible, plausible effect via the connective tissue pathway, but not a miracle cure and no substitute for exercise.
What matters: being realistic and coming from within
The most effective strategy is unspectacular: build muscle, strengthen the connective tissue from within and keep your expectations realistic. Hydrolysed collagen peptides with vitamin C – as in the Liquid collagen from Bettervita – provide the building blocks for this. And perhaps the most important point: cellulite is normal; it is not a flaw that needs to be „fixed“.
Cellulite is found in the connective tissue, not in one’s character. What really helps works from the inside and through the muscles – not from the most expensive jar.
Beauty begins from within.
