Collagen from within or cream from the outside? Why the molecule is the deciding factor
Collagen molecules are too large to penetrate the skin. Why creams remain on the surface and only oral collagen reaches the fibroblasts.

„Collagen cream“ sounds logical: wrinkles form because of a lack of collagen – so you apply collagen back into the skin. But that’s not how skin works. Whether collagen has an effect when applied externally or taken internally is not determined by marketing, but by the size of a single molecule.
The question has been phrased incorrectly
A cream versus drinking – that sounds like two equally valid ways of achieving the same goal. In fact, they serve very different purposes. A cream works on the surface of the skin, whilst oral collagen works from within the body. Anyone who pits the two against each other is overlooking the crucial point: the skin is a Barrier – Its outermost layer has evolved specifically to seal the body off from the environment. It does not allow everything applied to it to penetrate, and makes no exception for high-priced active ingredients.
The 500-dalton rule
The maximum size a molecule can be in order to penetrate the intact skin barrier has been well researched. Bos & Meinardi (2000) The well-known … formulated this as follows: „500-Dalton rule“: Only molecules weighing around 500 daltons or less have any realistic chance of penetrating the outermost layer of the skin. A native collagen molecule weighs many times that – it is well above this limit. It is simply too large to travel from the surface down to the dermis, where the body’s own collagen is located.
What a collagen cream actually does
That doesn’t mean that a cream „containing collagen“ is useless – it simply works differently to what is promised. The large collagen molecules form a film on the skin and trap moisture there. The skin appears plumper and smoother in the short term. But it does not build up new collagen in the dermis and does not replenish collagen stores – the result is a cosmetic moisturising film, not structural remodelling. We address this same misconception in the Anti-ageing myths.
The path from within
Collagen drinks take the opposite approach. They do not consist of whole molecules, but rather of hydrolysed collagen peptides – short-chain compounds broken down by enzymes. These are absorbed in the gut and travel via the bloodstream to the skin, where they Fibroblasts reach – the cells that produce collagen. There, they act as building blocks and as signals to stimulate the body’s own collagen production. Proksch et al. (2014) showed in a randomised controlled trial that oral collagen peptides measurably improve skin elasticity. The difference compared with the cream is therefore not a gradual one, but a fundamental one: one remains trapped at the skin barrier, whilst the other bypasses it via a detour through the digestive tract and the bloodstream. Whether this route is effective depends on the Bioavailability – that is, the form in which the collagen actually enters the body and reaches the fibroblasts.
To be honest: creams do have their place
None of this argues against external skincare – quite the opposite. It’s just that „collagen in a jar“ is the wrong active ingredient for this. Other ingredients have been proven to be effective when applied topically:
- Retinoids: have been proven to stimulate collagen production in the skin – the best-documented anti-ageing active ingredient applied topically.
- Vitamin C: as an antioxidant and co-factor in collagen synthesis, directly within the skin.
- Sun protection (SPF): the most important form of protection of all – UV radiation breaks down collagen faster than any cream could replace it.
- Humidity: exactly what a good cream – even one „containing collagen“ – actually does.
The interior and exterior complement each other
So, to be honest, it’s not a case of one or the other. On the outside, you protect and care for the skin’s surface – with sun protection, retinoids, vitamin C and moisturiser. From the inside, you provide the fibroblasts with the building blocks that no cream can deliver through the skin barrier. That is exactly what a liquid collagen The idea: hydrolysed peptides with vitamin C, in liquid form with high bioavailability, so that they reach the very places where collagen is produced. Which Form – liquid, powder or tablet – and what makes the difference is a topic in its own right.
External collagen stays at the door; only what is small enough to reach the skin from within can have an effect. The cream nourishes the surface – the deeper layers are nourished by what you drink.
Beauty begins from within.
