Vitamin C and collagen

Vitamin C is an essential component of skin health — both as a low-molecular-weight antioxidant and as a key factor in collagen synthesis. In powder form, however, ascorbic acid is unstable and breaks down on contact with air, light and heat. What determines its effect is therefore not only the ingredient, but the right formulation.

According to the manufacturer, an accelerated six-month stability test to ICH standards was carried out on the liquid formulas: storage at 40 °C and 75 % relative humidity in the manufacturer's GMP-certified laboratory, with pH value, viscosity, density, microbial load and vitamin C content analysed every 30 days. Also according to the manufacturer, a preservative efficacy (challenge) test in accordance with the European Pharmacopoeia was carried out.

  • Too much sun: UV radiation breaks down collagen — daily sun protection is a must.
  • Lack of sleep: Sleep is crucial for collagen repair and production.

Who should be careful

  • Kidney diseases or kidney stones: Collagen is a protein; with a high intake, seek medical advice and drink enough water.
  • Allergies: if you have a fish/shellfish allergy, avoid marine collagen and check the origin.
  • Autoimmune diseases or medication: if you take blood thinners, NSAIDs or blood pressure medication, consult your doctor beforehand.
